Written Assignment #5

The Kyoto Protocol is an agreement made under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Countries that ratify this protocol commit to reduce their emissions of carbon dioxide and five other greenhouse gases, or engage in emissions trading if they maintain or increase emissions of these gases.

"The Kyoto Protocol is an agreement under which industrialised countries will reduce their collective emissions of greenhouse gases by 5.2% compared to the year 1990 (but note that, compared to the emissions levels that would be expected by 2010 without the Protocol, this limitation represents a 29% cut). The goal is to lower overall emissions of six greenhouse gases - carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, sulfur hexafluoride, HFCs, and PFCs - calculated as an average over the five-year period of 2008-12. National limitations range from 8% reductions for the European Union and some others to 7% for the US, 6% for Japan, 0% for Russia, and permitted increases of 8% for Australia and 10% for Iceland."

New automobile technologies are making new cars more fuel-efficient, helping in the fight against global warming -- a six-speed automated manual transmission can save 8 percent of a vehicle's CO2 emissions, for example.New automobile technologies, already in limited use in today’s cars, are helping in the fight against global warming. Continuous variable valve lift technologies improve the way engines breathe, reducing about 5 percent of a car’s carbon dioxide emissions.

There are many problems with the Kyoto Protocol and President George W. Bush does not agree with it and therefore refuses to sign the treaty. Do you agree or disagree with this position? Do you believe a law should be drafted that requires auto manufacturers in the United States to produce vehicles that achieve 50 miles per gallon of gasoline? Is it possible for auto makers to produce such an automobile?

this is jordan: i think restrictions should be implace to lower the emittions of harmful greenhouse gases. lowering the gases will greatly improve the enviroment.

I believe that George Bush should sign the Kyoto Protocol. Not only our generation, but generations to come will benefit from a cleaner, safer enviroment.
I don't believe that it would be wise to make a law that states how each vehicle has to have 50 miles to the gallon. It would be really nice if all cars could have 50 miles to the gallon, but there shouldn't be a law that states it's necessary.
Yes, it is possible for automakers to create a vehicle that has 50 miles per gallon. New solar-powered cars can do this and
it helps the enviroment. Newer hybrids can reach up to 150 miles per gallon. A new "air-powered" car is coming to the U.S. in 2009-2010, could possibly reach 1,000 miles per gallon while going 96 mph.

I believe the the Kyoto protocol should deffiently be signed by our current or our new president. Global warming and the protection of our planet should be of the utmost priority.

The emissions being put into the air of our world are causing gases to be traped in and thus making our planet hotter and hotter. Ice caps are starting to melt at faster pace then we ever saw before. This will cause sea level to rise.

As one of the bigger countries in the world for automotive use we need to put some kind of rules down to help out or problem. Cars can deffiently reach fifty miles to the gallon and decrease pollution dramatically.

If all of the major countries sign the protocol and reduce our emissions we will be on the right track to a better world but not finished. We need to figure out ways to mkae our planet better every day.

I personally think that George Bush should sign the Kyoto Protocol. I personally see no reason why not to sign it. Bush might claim reducing emissions will have negative effects on our economy, but i think the money that would be saved from pollution cleanup, along with other restoration efforts would make up for it. Also showing the world that America actually does care about everyone else (and not just their resources) would definitely outweigh the negatives of a possible damage to the economy. A law where every car must get 50 miles per gallon would be nice but I don't think it is necessary. It is definitely possible to make cars with such mileage, but the auto industry would most likely crash if they had to make such expensive 50mpg cars to sell to everyone.

I believe very much that the current president should sign the treaty. Our earth is much more important than many of some problems in the world.
I think it is a good idea to get a car that reaches 50 miles to the gallon and that is also safer for our enviroment. The more we can do now to help, the better to help the next generations to come.

If we could get many of the countries to sign the protocal, the better ans sooner we can help the enviroment and that would be the best thing for everyone else around if they made the effort as well. Having the new cars that get 50 miles to gallon would also be beninfited to everyone with the gas prices sky rocketing, and getting higher each day.

I think that George Bush should sign the Kyoto Protocol. I also believe that it is a safe bet, I don't see any reasons not to sign it. I would allow a safer, and cleaner environment for many generations.
I think that it would be nice if we had that law, this 50 miles to the gallon would save alot on gas, considering prices are increasing. However 50 miles to gallon is alot, and in order to achieve that they may have to get rid of some automobiles like SUVs, and big trucks that some people need in thier daily life.
This is possible to create a vehicle like this. The hybrid cars have the greatest impact on our environment, they help keep it clean and save you money on gas while doing so.

I think that Bush is stupid for not signing the protocol. he should sign it and help things in the enviorment get better. he talks of global warming but he cant sign the simple protocol. yes car companies can make engines that get 50 miles per gallon. in england they already have these kinds of cars. but they are also on board for the protocol. bush should sign this agreement.

I think that George Bush is not smart at all. and he should sign the Kyoto Protocol. It would help out many people any mostly the enviroment. i thinik that it would be good if all cars had 50 miles per gallon but you dont need to pass a law for it. yes it would be possible to make a car like that but if it gets in an accedent and starts on fire it is goin to be gone. if they do make a car that gets 50 mpg then i will buy one!!!

I don't believe that it would be a good idea to make a law that each vehicle has to have 50 miles to the gallon. Of course it would be good if all cars could have 50 miles to the gallon, but it is unneccesary to pass a law. I think this would make cars very expensive trying to make them all fuel so efficient, and a lot of families need bigger trucks for their own personal needs.

Yes, it is possible for automakers to create a vehicle that has 50 miles per gallon. It also helps the enviroment for cars to be made like this. Newer hybrids can reach up to 150 miles per gallon and the technology keeps getting better, so there is more fuel efficient cars to come in the future.

I feel that while although the Kyoto Protocol may have several flaws ,Bush is overlooking the bigger picture.Even if the protocol dents our economy a little think of how much more it can do for the entire world.Less greenhouse emmisions means better air quality, does Bush want his country to suffer with poor air quality just because he's afraid signing this protocol can harm the economy?Well NEWSFLASH there is'nt an economy without people to help it along. What will other countries have to say when they hear how the U.S doesn't want to help itself or other there nations? There goes only 1/2 the economy.O.K so if Bush doesn't want to sign the protocol why not do SOMETHING to help the global effort ,for example i think it is a good idea to make cars that acheive 50 miles per gallon of gasoline, because i mean if we cut back just a little on how much gas we use then maybe we can start improving the world today, and i\if hes so worried about the economy, trust almost everyone is going to want to but this car and not just in the u.s other countries as well so why not manufacture them in the u.s then the economy won't suffer AS much and we are helping atleast allitle

I strongly agree that Geroge W Bush should sign the Kyoto Protocol.I think this whould benifit are society because lower gas prices and whould help our generation and futher generations with money and saving gas and there pocket money I think this is posible very much so it could be done so but are goverment has banned on this because they want to keep taking oil from Iraq beacuse we dont want to tap into are oil becase we try to gain and not lose are money and oil if we increased are gas by mile we whould be set for life
